Hephaestus is the god of fire and crafts or the two subjects put together.  He was the great blacksmith for the Olympians and even forged thunderbolts for Zeus himself.

He is the son of Zeus and Hera and some say that Hera born him by herself.  Hephaestus was born crippled and disabled and when Hera saw this she tossed him down from Olympus where he fell for an entire day.  He landed in the sea where Nymphs took him to Lemnos and cared for him.

Another story tells that Zeus was arguing with Hephaestus for siding with Hera.  The enraged Zeus took Hephaestus by the foot and hurled him down Olympus where he for for nine days and nights.  Finally he landed on the island of Lemnos where he built his palace and forge within a volcanoe.
